Project Description
Linum usitatissimum (flax) is a plant with large potential in producing valuable natural products (lignans), which are useful for therapeutic, nutraceutic and cos-metic purposes. The fundamental goal of the present project was to figure out why linseeds produce lignans in reasonable concentrations and in vitro cell cultures of Linum do not.. Metabolic blocks inhibiting the production of lignans in vitro should be identified. These studies are supposed to find conditions for biotechnological lignan production. An equivalent goal was to identify plants in order to establish stable stands of highly productive Linum cultivars, which are characterized by special lignan patterns.
